Many Reportedly Seeking Care For Allergies This Holiday Season

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Ah, the sounds of the holiday season: sniffling, wheezing, and sneezing.

It's the allergy season that won't quit. Dr. Mani Kavuru, Division Director of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Jefferson says a lot of people are seeking care.

"At our clinics, we're definitely seeing much more exacerbations and flares of allergic respiratory disease, and asthma being the classic thing that we see a lot of."

Although the warm temperatures have tricked some flowers into blooming, there's not enough pollen in the air to blame.

"The best thinking is that molds and mold spores, which proliferate or grow on vegetation is probably the likely culprit."

Dr. Kavuru says, over his 20-year career, he's seen an increase in winter allergies, a phenomenon he links to climate change.

"I think we ought to start thinking about this, and having approaches that are long-term, both for health and also the environment."
