Wolf Aide Trashes Budget Bill On Governor's Desk; Mum On Possible Action

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- Governor Wolf's office says he will make an announcement Tuesday morning on what he plans to do with a Republican-passed budget on his desk. Monday, the governor still wasn't saying what he might do, but one of his top aides released a statement criticizing the spending plan as a display of "fiscal irresponsibility."

After a negotiated budget deal failed to get through the state House, last Wednesday the Senate sent Governor Wolf a budget that is significantly leaner than he wants.

Without saying what the governor might do with the budget bill, one of his top aides – John Hanger – released a statement Monday afternoon ripping the budget bill, claiming the spending plan would effectively cut school funding by millions of dollars and that the measure does nothing to address the state's structural deficit. Hanger says the GOP-passed budget "uses gimmicks" and represents the "status quo." But the statement does not say what the governor plans to do with the budget.

He can sign it or let it become law without his signature; or he can veto it in whole or in part.
