Weekend Box Office Report: Star Wars Continues Box Office Domination
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For a second straight weekend – and undoubtedly not the last one at that – the box office rankings boiled down to Star Wars and all the rest.
The science fiction sequel, Star Wars: The Force Awakens – installment number 7 – had another runaway first-place finish after scoring the biggest weekend opening in movie history last weekend.
This weekend it earned an estimated $154-million, pushing it close to the $550-million mark in less than two weeks.
The debuting Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy, Daddy's Home, took second place with an opening total of $39-million.
Three other new attractions placed in the top ten:
Joy, the comedy-drama starring Jennifer Lawrence, was third with nearly $18-million.
The Will Smith football drama, Concussion, took in $11-million, good for sixth place, while the action thriller, Point Break, finished eighth with $10-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were below those of last weekend, but well ahead of a year ago, thanks mostly to the Force of Star Wars.
