Stylists Give Free Haircuts To Homeless In Philadelphia

By Kristen Johanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than a hundred homeless men received free haircuts Monday at Chosen 300 on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia.

"Part of the reason people get into the hair industry A) is to change lives, B) it's the last industry where you can actually touch people, talk to people and get to know a little more about them," said hair stylist Daryl Smith, who works at Fantastic Sam's Hair Salon in Dover, Delaware.  He drives up to Philadelphia twice a month, to give back.

"I come because of the stories I hear from the people who come to Chosen 300, and it inspires me every other week to come here," said Smith.

Curtis Clark says he's grateful for all of the volunteer stylists.

"It's all about looking good, first impressions," he said. "I have some interviews for some food service jobs, and things of that nature, some hospitality jobs, and they really look at your impression, because if you are up front, everybody's going to see you when they come in the door."

Clayton Wise says this gives him a boost in confidence.

"They cut real good," he said. "I'm going to get a job."

Volunteer stylist Maurice Heard owns Kings and Queens Cuts and Styles in Southwest Philadelphia, but volunteers his time to give back.

"A lot of them feel a lot better once they get their hair cut, whether they are going out there to look for a job or whatever, or just to go see their family or whatever," said Heard.

Howard Foster hopes for an opportunity soon.

"No job interviews, but just in case if I run into someone on the street that has a business or something like that, I can be more presentable."
