Local Priest Explains Why Christmas Should Really Be Celebrated

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On this Christmas Day, the rector of Philadelphia's Roman Catholic Cathedral says Pope Francis is showing us why we need to celebrate Christmas.

Fr. Dennis Gill, rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, says Christmas is not just a celebration for a few days and there is a reason to push aside the hopelessness and gloom gripping our world- and celebrate the light that chases away that darkness.

Rather it can have lasting impact on the hearts and minds of all, if we let it.

"Not just the Christian in the pew in the church. But for society as well - for everybody everywhere. And I think if we had that sense, then we can see a difference. We can see a difference not just in the most devout person, but among all people. And that's what the celebration is supposed to do," Gill told KYW Newsradio.

Gill says the celebration of Christmas is to bring to light the mystery of the savior in a way that's most accessible.
