PA House To Press Ahead With Budget Stopgap Legislation

HARRISBURG (CBS) -- Over the objections of Governor Wolf and Senate Republican leaders, House GOP leaders said Sunday they will vote this week on temporary "stopgap" funding as the state budget impasse grinds on.

A tentative state budget deal broke down Saturday when the House resoundingly rejected part of that deal, a public employee pension reform plan. Afterward, the state Senate majority leader said he wanted the House send over a 12-month budget with no tax increases, not a stopgap measure.

Governor Wolf said the stopgap is not the goal.

"Let me be clear: a stopgap is not the answer," Governor Wolf said. "That is not the answer."

But Republican Dave Reed, the House majority leader, said Saturday that it is the best the House can do right now.

"It does not seem like the majority of the folks in this body want to do a full year budget," Reed said. "So we're not really left with a whole lot of other choices right now."

And Sunday, a spokesman for Reed confirmed the House will move ahead with temporary, stopgap funding legislation.
