For Local Non - Profit, Donations This Season Are Low; Despite Request At A Record High

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An organization in Philadelphia that has been throwing a Christmas celebration for hundreds of needy kids and their families for more than a decade this year is having a new dilemma. This year, despite a lack in donations, they are still putting their best foot forward.

Every year, Martin Luther King Jr. Association for non violence and their partners throw a party for more than 500 kids and their families. At these parties, the kids get toys, clothing, and food to take home. Organizers says this year it will be scaled down because of the a lack of corporate participation.

Volunteer coordinator Ken Slayton says the room they organize everything in looks very different compared to previous years.

"In the corner, about six feet tall, there use to be boxes all the way around to cover this whole room up, even in the middle," Slayton said.

He said this holiday season is different when compared to years past.

"Donations are at a all time low," Slayton said. "I would say and I have been with the organization for 5 years and I have never seen it like this."

Donations are low and request are at a record high with approximately 3,000 applicants requesting holiday help many will be turned away.
