Bucks County Woman On Trial In Connection With Assault On Same-Sex Couple Takes The Stand

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Bucks County woman on trial in connection with the 2014 assault on a gay couple in Center City has taken the stand, in her own defense. Then jurors heard more than two hours of closing arguments. After getting instruction on points of law from the judge in the morning, jurors will begin deliberations.

Kathryn Knott told the jury eight men and seven women in her group were out that night for a surprise birthday party, and when they reached 16th and Chancellor Streets, she heard a commotion behind her.

The 25-year-old woman from Southampton testified she ran back to the scuffle to try to stop it, because she did not want to see anyone get hurt. She maintains she never uttered a derogatory anti-gay slur and did not punch, strike, or hit anyone.

One of the two victims and three bystanders testified Knott struck one of the gay men. Four people in her group testified they did not see her hit anyone or yell any slurs.

Two men in her group involved in the fight pleaded guilty to assault charges and got probation. She chose to go to trial.
