Local High School Students Win Team Title At Math, Science And Technology Competition

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Three area high school students are winners of the team title in the Sieimens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Emily Cheng, of Lansdale, and Gerald Liu, of Audubon, both juniors at Methacton High School, and Kelly Jiang, of Wayne, a junior at Conestoga High School are sharing a scholarship award.

Cheng, a team leader, says they worked over the summer on the project.

"My team was able to develop a set of procedures, essentially, to be able to detect liver cancer in its earlier stages. And, we were able to detect this in urine which is not invasive at all."

And, that's not all.

"We also developed a software that can analyze all this data quickly and accurately."

Cheng says the project came about through a very personal ordeal.

"Actually I have a close friend and our close neighbor. He passed away recently due to stage 4 liver cancer. And, because it was detected too late. So, that's what got me interested in early detection of cancer."

The others - who also attend the Trinity Christian Church of Greater Philadelphia in Havertown with Cheng - agreed to join her.

The Blumberg Institute in Doylestown provided lab access to the young scientists at its research facilities and as well as an advisor.
