A Judge Rules In Favor Of The City Of Margate; Preventing New Jersey From Building Dunes

NEW JERSEY (CBS) -- The City of Margate has picked up a victory in court against the state of New Jersey in the long-running saga over building dunes on the beach.

Governor Chris Christie wants to erect a protective dune the entire length of New Jersey, all 127 miles, but this ruling by an Atlantic County Superior Court judge prevents the project from moving forward.

Margate Mayor Michael Becker says residents voted down dune proposals, twice.

"Dunes are obtrusive, they're big," Becker said. "They will take up one-third of our beaches. They're not very nice looking."

And he says they wash away quickly in a big storm. Becker believes Margate's bulkheads are all the protection they need.

"The bulkheads have been here for 60 years, survived many storms."

Both sides will be back in court in February to present their cases.
