Booker Addresses Legislation Aimed At Reforming No Child Left Behind
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The much maligned No Child Left Behind Act is getting a reboot. Compromise legislation, called the Every Student Succeeds Act, gets a final vote today in the U.S. Senate.
In a telephone news conference, New Jersey's Junior U.S. Senator, Cory Booker, said the legislation dials back the federal role in education, giving more control back to the states.
"This bill represents a compromise that reaffirms the federal government's commitment to supporting student, teacher, and school success," Booker said, "while turning the page on the overly prescriptive No Child Left Behind era that so many people in New Jersey -- policy makers, teachers, parents, and even student-activists themselves -- have been working against."
The House overwhelmingly passed the bill last week. If it clears the Senate, the legislation heads to the desk of President Obama, who says he'll sign it.
Booker said legislation replacing No Child Left Behind will be good for the Garden State.
