Safety Experts: The American Worker Should Train For Mass Shooting Situations

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The pictures are terrifying, but the mass shooting in San Bernardino is not uncommon.

This year alone, it marks the 355th shooting of four or more people at one time in the United States.

Unfortunately, experts say training for an active shooter is something the american worker should now do.

And the number one piece of advice in these horrible situations is simply, run.

"I'm not saying let's go from 0 to 100, but now we have to start thinking about 'what if'.. If and when this should happen here, what am i going to do?"

Ingage security owner and active shooter scenario trainer Michael Hall says mentally preparing for the worst is what could save your life.

"The strongest thing you have is your brain. And the most important tool you have are your feet," Hall explained. "Get out. [The] only real chance you have is to get out."

Hall says if you have no way to escape, start looking for a safe place to hide.

"If you're choosing to hide, you're going to want cover, not concealment. Try to get behind something that is going to stop a bullet, and then you're whole motive is to get out though," Hall said.

If you can't hide and you can't get out, Hall says your last option is to fight for your life. The key, he says, is to work through a plan in your mind.

He says even taking a few minutes every week to think about what you'd do in an active shooting could make you react even quicker if you ever need to during an emergency.
