Former KYW Newsradio Traffic Reporter Gives Back With Memoir On Cerebral Palsy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Long time KYW Newsradio traffic reporter John Brown has written a memoir detailing a life spent conquering disability.

The very first thing you'll notice about John Brown- is the last thing that actually matters.

"I never considered myself different," Brown told Eyewitness News.

Brown is two years into his retirement after nearly half century in broadcast journalism, including a decade long stint as a KYW Newsradio traffic reporter.

John has made a career of broadcasting to thousands, traveling the world, and taking joy ride on jets.

Through all that, few ever even noticed that first thing, John has cerebral palsy.

His wife Donna said the pair dated for four or five months when she realized something might have been wrong with Brown.

"I went to get out of the car and could not use my left leg," Brown said.

One year ago with the fresh mixture of pain and retirement, Donna challenged Brown to do something.

"I said you will not sit home all day," Donna said.

Together they came up with "Why Not," an award-winning story of how what should be someone's greatest weakness... is a strength.

On this GivingTuesday, John's giving back for every copy of his book that he sells.

A dollar will be donated to a place called Variety Camp, where he learned that disabilities shouldn't be hindering, but rather a motivation.

The 88-acre facility is haven for special needs kid, often whose biggest need is just to feel normal.

Brown says even if his book helps just one person, then why not.
