Five Firefighters Injured After Ladder Crashes In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Five firefighters were injured Sunday morning when their ladder truck crashed while responding to a call in West Philadelphia.

It happened around 10 a.m. in the 5400 hundred block of Baltimore Avenue when the truck careened off the street.

"They bottomed out, lost control," said Officer Mark Eib. "The front of the truck struck a parked car, put it up on the curve into the (mailing and shipping) store."

The ladder also slammed into another parked car and a light pole.

Louis Torres works at a tire shop right next to where the crash took place. He said he was just feet from the accident and was able to pull a customer out of harm's way before he called 911.

"One of the firemen came out the door," Torres said. "He just flew out bleeding all crazy. It was a lot of blood."

All five firefighters were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with what officials described as minor injuries.
