Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Winter Sports

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For winter sport buffs, Thanksgiving signals the coming of a new season in the Pennsylvania mountains. Ski areas are already test firing their snow guns.

Turkey on the table means visions of skiing and riding from nearby Spring Mountain to Elk in the Endless Mountains. In a couple of weeks trails should be opening.

All of Pennsylvania's nearly two dozen ski resorts have beefed up snowmaking with modern technology. But Spring Mountain operator Rick Buckman notes tech wizardry will, more than ever, cut those irritating lines at lodge and lift through online ticketing and rental.

"We can cut that down drastically," Buckman says, "and people are happier now."

And look for the first full season of the new 453 room ski-in ski-out Camelback Lodge, a sushi bar at Bear Creek, innovative learning programs at Blue Mountain, a new eatery at Jack Frost and an expansion of Spring Mountain after-school programs.

By the way, most resorts still have some job openings that come with season passes.

Think snow.
