For Local Man, A New Kidney Means A New Life

By Molly Daly

UPLAND, Pa., (CBS) -- The Crozer-Keystone Regional Kidney Transplant team hosted a special Thanksgiving dinner Wednesday for two patients who received new kidneys on Saturday.

Larry Lawrence waited eight years for a kidney.

"What a Thanksgiving present!" said Lawrence.

For the 66-year-old Southwest Philadelphia man, a new kidney means a new life.

"I won't have to go to dialysis three times a week, and get stuck every other day. It's just a tremendous blessing. I'll be able to go someplace and just go for a ride," said Lawrence.

This Thanksgiving, Lawrence says he and his family will offer a special prayer.

"We just pray for goodwill to all men, and for others who have kidney conditions, and any other conditions, to get better," said Lawrence.

And after the prayers are said?

"Just give me some turkey, and some stuffing!" he said.

"This is new life coming in. To be in the hospital because you're sick and you're not getting better is one thing. To be in a hospital knowing you just got a new organ, and you're going to be able to live a completely different life, and a more fulfilling one, is something we all look forward to."
