Taste With Tori: Chick's Deli

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) --  When you think of Philly food, cheesesteaks might come to mind.

But what about cheesesteaks that are not made in Philly and you have to drive over the bridge for them?

CBS3's Vittoria Woodill reveals a place that may be the best kept deli secret in our area.

Down a little alley off Marlton Pike on Township Lane, it's lunchtime in Cherry Hill.

Lots of customers are lining up at Chick's Deli for hoagies and cheesesteaks.

Joe Danfield has owned the deli since 1976.

He bought it from a guy who opened the place in 1957.

It was called Chick's Deli back then and the name stuck.

"Cause it was good," said Danfield as he explained why he never changed the name. "Who'd know Joe's, who'd know Tony's, it's Chick's."

The real question is how do people know about this place.

"We hear that a lot" say Danfield. "Word of mouth, it's the best advertisement."

Word of mouth about Chick's Deli might have started long ago but that word of mouth flies down the information highway today.

"Like people google you, they want cheesesteaks," he said. "We have people call from the turnpike and say I'm coming through, I'm coming from Connecticut, I'm going to Washington D.C., it's unbelievable."

And it's not all about hoagies at Chick's.

In the morning,  breakfast sandwiches are being made for a  gang of early birds.

Joe says they're retired guys who come in early to drink coffee and solve the world's problems.

Retired history professor Jolyon Girard is one of the early birds.

"People my age get up early," said Jolyon. "You come down here and chat with the guys, swap lies then go home!"

He pointed out where each guy sits.

"My contractor friend sits in that seat, a guy in his 80s who repaired diesel engines all his life sits in that seat," he said.

He said some of the gang has passed away and pointed out the plaque on the wall that lists their names.

Chick's is a deli that has a loyal following and very tasty food.
