Kane Deputies To Testify Before Senate Panel

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- The chairman of a special state Senate committee studying whether Kathleen Kane can function as attorney general with a suspended law license says her top deputies will appear before the panel Wednesday.

The chairman of the Senate committee, Republican John Gordner, made the announcement at the end of a hearing during which constitutional experts were questioned about the possible limitations on Kathleen Kane due to the suspension of her law license. Kane's top deputies last month sent her a memo stating that they disagree with her view that few adjustments are necessary to operations of the attorney general's office.

"Yes, we want to ask them about the memo that they all signed off on Oct. 22nd. And I think it is helpful to know what the current status and functionality of the attorney general's office is."

Kane's spokesman has said she contends most of her duties are administrative. But in the memo, given to the committee by Kane and released Monday, her deputies said the suspension of Kane's law license presented "pressing legal issues."
