Montgomery County School District Confirms Case Of Bacterial Meningitis

By Dan Wing

CHELTENHAM, Pa., (CBS) -- A Montgomery County School District has confirmed that a student has been diagnosed with Bacterial Meningitis.

Susan O'Grady is Director of Communications and Development for the Cheltenham School District. O'Grady says the student and which school they attend will not be identified, but says there is no risk to other students or staff.

"The Montgomery County Health Department assured us that it was an isolated case, and that our students and faculty were in no threat," said O'Grady.

Bacterial meningitis is usually severe. While most people with meningitis recover, it can cause serious complications, such as brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disabilities.

While the bacteria is contagious, it cannot spread by casual contact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been.

Families who may have questions can contact the Montgomery County Health Department's Division of Communicable Disease Control at 610-278-5117.
