PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's a hardy breed of shopper who takes advantage of the long Thanksgiving weekend to haunt the mountains, looking for the perfect winter hideaway.
Our first long-term winter rental was a three bedroom home in a wooded setting on the banks of Idlewild Lake, just a couple of miles from Elk Mountain. It was shared by 3 couples, an Irish Setter, a poodle and a Dalmatian. Splitting the cost and saving kennel fees made it an incredible bargain for a ski season that provided weekend getaways and midweek vacations.
Mountain homes near a favorite ski resort are available by the week, month or the entire season.
In the Poconos, condo complexes are slopeside or nearby at Jack Frost, Big Boulder, Camelback and Shawnee.
Private homes can be found in the Endless Mountains near Elk. Virtually all have fireplaces and are furnished right down to the cookware.
A Thanksgiving getaway in search of a winter hideaway is a launching pad to a new ski season, just weeks away. Weather permitting, of course.
