Interview: Carly Rae Jepsen Brings 'Emotion' To Philadelphia

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Carly Rae Jepsen has managed to do something rare.

"Call Me Maybe" was inescapable in 2012. It was the best-selling single worldwide that year, managed a couple of Grammy nominations, and chances are you or someone you know uploaded a lip-sync performance of it on YouTube. Unfortunately though her album Kiss couldn't find another hit and she became destine to sit at the One Hit Wonder table, passing the bread to The Baha Men.

But then, something miraculous happened. After some time away and a stop on Broadway, the Canadian singer roared back this year with the carefully crafted perfect pop album Emotion. Soaked in the 80's but delivered with an earnest touch, Emotion pays homage to the decade in a way that's genuine and spectacular. It's been praised here and in just about every other corner of the music listening internet. Everyone from Time to Pitchfork has applauded Emotion, effectively bringing Jespen back from the depths of being a trivia answer and making her a part of the conversation once more.

Jepsen heads out on tour this week with a stop in Philadelphia on Friday November 13th at The Trocadero. From the road she explains how it felt to wonder what's next.

"I think that there was definitely a moment in time where it felt like you could choose either one of two roots. To kind of be paralyzed by the fact that there was a big hit or to look at it as an opening door and an opportunity to kind of show other sides of what I wanted to do. I kind of chose the latter" she explains. "I definitely struggled with it for a bit but two and a half years later I figured out what I wanted to make and I felt very excited about it."

"There's a little bit of a rebellion of wanting to do something completely different than what you made but also kind of being aware that that was sort of something that I was known for. I love pop music so straying too far from that didn't feel right to me, though that was hard at first. I think I found my solution in the world of 80's because it just felt like there was - for lack of a better word - more emotion to that era when it comes to pop music, and that really excited me."
