5 Tips To Avoid Stuffing Yourself On Thanksgiving

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The holidays are coming, time to stuff your face with family favorites. Here are 5 simple tips to keep from over stuffing yourself.

Load up that plate with turkey and vegetables, but skip the carbohydrates. Registered Dietition Alex Buccino suggests the fork trick.

"After taking a bite, be mindful of chewing your food and really thoroughly swallowing by placing your fork down after each bite, it helps remind you to slow down enjoy what you're eating and know when you're full."

Buccino says avoid the clean plate club, eat just 80-percent of what you took and if you want dessert, no problem.

"Thanksgiving full of pies, all that good stuff, instead of having a full slice to yourself maybe sit down with a loved one and share it so this way you're still enjoying it, you're not depriving yourself but you're just having a slightly smaller portion of it."

Finally, create an active tradition by going to the gym or playing a family football game.
