Montgomery County Encourages Veterans To Record Discharge Papers
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- On Veteran's Day and for the entire month of November, Montgomery County's recorder of deeds is reminding veterans to bring in their discharge papers to make sure they're properly recorded.
Montgomery County recorder of Deeds Nancy Becker says veterans are invited to bring their discharge papers – or DD-214 to the Recorder of Deeds office. She says the process takes about ten minutes, but once it's recorded, it's there forever, in case the vet or his or her family needs a copy.
"We can provide a certified copy," Becker says, "and that certified copy can be used as an original."
Becker says it's helpful in may cases. For example, at time of death, a funeral director can contact the office for copy to start arrangements for a military funeral, and to check if any benefits are due to the family.
She says veterans can also get a photo ID from recorder of deeds. That ID can be used for discounts at hundreds of businesses that have signed up with her office.
