Taste With Tori: Sofia Restaurant

MARGATE, N.J., (CBS) -- It's a little bit of the Greek Islands at the Jersey shore in this Taste With Tori.

CBS3's Vittoria Woodill takes us to a restaurant that will make you feel like you're in Europe.

The owners of Sofia Restaurant wanted it to be warm and beautiful so they drew their inspiration from the woman they called their "Ya-ya".

That's greek for grandmother.

Around all this water the mist of memories is never far away for Angela Diamantis.

"It reminds me of my hometown in Greece right by the water where the sun sets," said Angela who owns the restaurant with her sister.

And here at Sofia in Margate they do what the Greeks do best.

They make you feel welcome and well-fed.

Bursting with flavorful and comforting dishes like homemade spanikopita, luscious lamb chops and appetizers from their wood-burning oven.

"Greek women by nature are caretakers, they want to feed you, take care of you, welcome you to our home," said Angela.

For Angela home is not just a place, it's also a feeling.

The restaurant is inspired by the home of her grandmother on the Greek island of Andros.

A special place, where as children, Angela, her brother and her sister would often visit.

"It was amazing, just the food and the sweets and the love," she recalled.

A painting of her grandmother adorns one of the walls in the restaurant.

How does the restaurant represent your Yaya's house," asked Vittoria.

"It has bamboo ceilings and stucco walls, little coves and arches," said Angela.

Along with high ceilings and wrought iron throughout the restaurant make you feel like you've walked into a seaside villa to enjoy a traditional greek dinner.

It's all Greek Mediterranean cuisine from the family recipes brought down through generations and we love to create love and to make people feel at home," said Sofia's Chef Adrienne Armenia.

And just like any trip to grandma's house you will always leave Sofia Restaurant full of food and happiness.

A special thanks to viewer Matthew Duffy for suggesting we visit Sofia Restaurant in Margate.
