NFL Player And Wilmington Native Devon Still Donates Games To Sick Kids
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Third and down on the 49 and Mekhi Mitchell's opponent may have an unfair advantage.
"He's beating me," Mitchell says.
Tuesday at the Nemours A.I. duPont Children's Hospital, former Bengals player and Penn State alum Devon Still donated more than a dozen Playstation 4'S… and spent the morning meeting and gaming with some of the patients.
"I think it's incredible. Even all this and to hear he really wants to help us," says Leanna Burcell, parents to one of those patients.
"It was awesome. Pretty cool to meet a football player and it was also cool that he donated the stuff for us," patient Brandon Allen says.
"It was just fun to see a football player come here and just talk to you," says patient Mason Seymour.
Helping out kids with cancer and other childhood illnesses is close to Devon's heart.
Last year, his own daughter battled pediatric cancer.
"She's doing a lot better. She's going through treatment right now. She has maintenance therapy she has to go through to make sure she stays in remission," Still says.
And today, he's paying it forward helping kids fighting similar illnesses.
"We definitely come back here and try to give back to the fans that are here and the kids that are here because we know exactly what they're going through," he says.
It's all part of the hospital's Child Life Program, meant to allow kids to live their lives and forget… at least for a bit… about their treatment…
"How are we going to help them cope better with being in the hospital, and most importantly how are we going to find ways for them to still be a kid," says duPont Hospital's Jennifer Sciolla.
Surely taking the time to game against a pro football player helps.
Greg Argos: "So what actually happens to all of these playstations? Well hospital officials say they'll be attached to mobile carts like that one and can be brought to children's rooms throughout the hospital."
