Camden Officials Working To Improve City, Resident's Lives

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) – Officials in Camden continue working to grow the impoverished city.

Federal, state and local officials convened Monday to discuss the obstacles they face, as a designated Federal Promise Zone.

City leaders met with officials at the Waterfront Technology Center to lay out solutions to the challenges they face in growing the city.

Camden Mayor Dana Redd says they want to improve resident's lives…from cradle to college to career:

"It's about bridging the gap, it's about human capacity, it's about working with children, youth and families within the city."

Last April, President Obama designated Camden as a Promise Zone, giving $22-million to the city to improve job growth, lower crime and work with city youth.

In turn, the city has to work with Federal agencies to solve some of their biggest problems.

"It's about making everyone a part of what we are doing in Camden," Redd says. "To rebuild, and to what we hope is the city of hope and promise, and the city invincible."

So far, dozens of businesses have invested about $2-billion into growing Camden.
