Local Man Creates His Own Coffee Company

By Greg Argos

LANSDALE, Pa., (CBS) -- One Lansdale man having trouble finding a good cup of local coffee, decided to fix the problem on his own.

Matt Adams created Backyard Beans Coffee Company when he couldn't find any good roasters at a local farmers' market.

"(My wife and I) were just walking around town on day and discovered the Lansdale Famers Market. I've always been a coffee drinker and I went to the market and there was no coffee," he said.

Adams already roasted some beans at home.

"I was a home roaster. (I roasted on a) whirly pop. Put a quarter pound of beans on and it roasts,"

But Adams wanted to sell some of his roasts at the market, so he then began roasting on his backyard grill.

"(I used) a Weber Grill. I've always been interested in small business, so I told my wife I want to start a coffee company roasting in a grill and selling at the farmers' market," explained Adams.

Now, Adams roasts about 600 pounds a week, and now rents a small warehouse to roast his coffee. His coffee is sold at local stores and even most Whole Foods in the area.

"It got to the point where we were doing 100 pounds a weekend and it was just time to move," said Adams.

Adams quit his job to manage Backyard Beans Coffee Company full time. He hired two part-time roasters to help roast the coffee beans.

"It's very scientific," said Luke Pigott, the head roaster for the company.

"We record the internal temperature of the bean throughout the roast process and have it visualized on the graph. I can get very angry at coffee, because I want to get it perfect," he continued.
