Jay Lloyd's Getaway: A Veteran's Trip Down Memory Lane

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With Veterans Day on the horizon, KYW's Jay Lloyd revisits favorite getaway spots that recall life in uniform.

My favorite getaway towns bring back vivid memories of service and stories of G.I.'s that served before and after my time. Boot Camp was Cape May, NJ. This year, the town was designated as a Coast Guard community. It's home to the Guard's only training center.

In nearby Wildwood, Naval Aviation vets will find a fascinating museum on the grounds of a World War II torpedo bomber training base.

"We've had pilots come back to see the aircraft they were actually in," says Bruce Fournier, Naval Air Museum director.

Fournier points to the rare surviving Grumman Avenger that gained fame in the Pacific.

Naval and Marine Corps tradition is at the heart of Annapolis, Maryland. A visit to the Naval Academy traces a vivid history of the men and women who served in the nation's most perilous times.

A getaway to the picturesque Hudson River Valley highlights Army tradition at West Point.

Nearby Dover and its aviation museum is the stop for Air Force vets.
