Five Shows To See This November In Philadelphia

By Michael Cerio

November. For many it is giving thanks for family. For Gun N' Roses it's bad weather. For Keanu Reeves it's a sleepover with Charlize Theron. For you it could be your chance to see a few great shows.

Here are five that stand out in Philadelphia:

Tuesday November 3rd – Kendrick Lamar at The Trocadero

Did you get your ticket? It wasn't long ago that Kendrick Lamar announced this brief tour making only a few stops around the country, in smaller-than-he-warrants rooms like The Troc. This pop-up intimate show dubbed the "1st Annual Kunta Groove Sessions" is sold out and designed especially for you to get up close to one of today's finest MCs.

Friday November 6th – The Districts and Lady Lamb at Electric Factory

Get jacked on Wilbur Chocolate and see some rock music with the boys from Lititz, PA. Momentum has been building for The Districts since this year's album "A Flourish And A Spoil" hit hard, and now the Lancaster County band headlines at the Factory with the excellent Lady Lamb supporting.

Saturday November 7th – Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at The TLA

These guys came out of nowhere this year with a batch of romping Americana-soaked songs. Their few TV performances have been proof that the passionate emoting in Rateliff's voice translates into an electric performance - so big in fact that they've moved the show to The TLA to accommodate more fans and still sold it out. Get in if you can.

Friday November 27th – Elle King at Union Transfer

The backstory on Elle King is almost as fascinating as that voice -- almost. King is the daughter of Rob "Making Copies" Schneider, attended Philadelphia's University Of The Arts, discovered the banjo, moved from LA to Demark to Bushwick all before age 25. From there she blew up the radio with "Ex's And Oh's" - part of her set of bluegrass and rockabilly infused rocking pop gems with that trademark rasp. If you missed King in a tiny bar during her college time here, you might consider not making the same mistake twice.

Saturday November 28th – The Front Bottoms at Electric Factory

I straight up love The Front Bottoms. These verbose folk punks out of New Jersey have climbed the ranks from DIY to Electric Factory headliners with an open-book approach to writing catchy fist-pumping anthems. If you're late to the party, join the devoted crowd for an honest and humble rock show and work off that turkey as you sweat in solidarity.

Honestly, there's so much to see this month beyond these five. Also around town this November is Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox at the Keswick, Carly Rae Jepsen at The Troc, My Morning Jacket at The Tower, and Angel Haze spitting fire at Underground Arts.
