What's Cooking on 1060: Rad Dish

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A unique student-run, sustainable, healthy cafe is open inside Ritter Hall at Temple University.

Kathleen Grady, director of sustainability at Temple University is the advisor assigned to the Rad Dish cafe: "Rad Dish is a student-run food cooperative cafe."

Student Claire Pope is in charge of Human Resources at Rad Dish.

"So there's no higher person there to be like, oh this is how you choose what staff to hire," says Pope, "this is the best way to train them.'"

Those involved come from all different fields of study -- like Trevor Southworth.

"I'm an accounting major from the Fox Business School, but we really accept anybody from any major to help out where they see fit."

It's a cafe with a mission: "We are a sustainable organization so everything that we get is local," says Pope.

Popular menu items include a hummus grilled cheese, a beet and lentil burger and a coconut curry soup:

"We are decidedly omnivorous just because of the equipment that we have in the cafe," says Southworth, "we aren't able to cook meat products right now but we're open to it in the future potentially."

Students get real life experience.

"It is really interesting to be able to apply a lot of the things I'm learning in the business school to a different kind of model than is generally taught in classrooms."

And they deal with real life concerns such as turning a profit.
Southworth says, "Uh, not quite."

Luckily for them, they are supported with seed grant money from the university.
