Flu And Vaccine Myths Busted At Bio Life Sciences Conference

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Folks at this year's Pennsylvania Bio Life Sciences Future conference at the downtown Sheraton in Philadelphia did a little myth busting in regard to the flu and vaccinations.
Christopher Molineaux, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Bio Life Sciences Future conference, says simply living in a first world country doesn't protect you from disease. He says the goal of the influenza panel discussion was to inform folks about the flu and encourage more people to get a flu shot.
"That's why we hold programs like this; because folks take for granted their health," Molineaux said.
He says there are a lot of myths out there about vaccinations. "The flu shot does not cause the flu," he said. "Vaccinations do not cause autism," he said.
Panelist Dr. Michael Kurilla with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease says you need a new flu shot each year:
"Unfortunately the flu virus that comes around on in and will basis is slightly different it changes from year-to-year and so we have to change the vaccine," Kurilla  said.
