PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A heart attack can be a life altering event. Even when it's caught early and treated effectively, a victim of a heart attack can't help but feel vulnerable and have a different outlook on life.

Many people don't realize that depression is a big problem in victims of heart attacks. It's estimated that one in five heart attack victims will suffer major depression and another 20 percent minor depression. Several studies have shown people who become depressed after a heart attack are at greater risk of suffering a subsequent heart attack. So, it's particularly important to treat depression for psychological well-being and survival.

Another key point is to not underestimate the importance of group therapy. People can get together and talk in a group and it can be quite therapeutic. It is important to have support.
