Police ID Driver Who Allegedly Caused Lehigh Univ. Bus Crash

By Justin Finch

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  State police have released the name of the driver whose sedan struck a Lehigh University bus, which caused the bus to roll over several times before coming to rest on its roof.

He's now being identified as Rodney Dale Sigley, Jr. of Quakertown. Witnesses say he was driving at a very high rate of speed Tuesday evening.

Roof to road, the Lehigh University bus toppled on route 22 and inside were the university's men's and women's crew teams and the bus driver.

Witness Kyle Allen says he was driving behind the crash and saw a dark colored Acura 2004 CL speeding, hit the rear of the bus, about 5:50 Tuesday evening near the Hanover Township exit.

"After the black car hit the bus, it pushed the bus into the cement barrier," says Allen, "once the bus hit the cement barrier it flipped two or three times."

The crash shut down Route 22 westbound in Bethlehem for most of the night.

Sigley, age 28, was pronounced dead on the scene and was reportedly ejected from the vehicle.

Witnesses say his car caught fire after the crash.

The university released a statement saying:

"The 20 students on the bus have been transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation, but preliminary reports indicate that there are no serious injuries involving Lehigh students or personnel."

The crew teams were taken to three area hospitals in Bethlehem, all with minor injuries, only one as being described as moderate.

The University says all 18 students and the bus driver were all released from the hospitals.

Authorities say the deceased driver, Rodney Dale Sigley, Jr. was due in court Thursday, October 29th 8:30 am for a formal arraignment to face drug possession and drug use charges that stem back to June 18, 2015.

The crash is still under investigation.
