Pa. Senate Fails To Override Veto Of Budget Stopgap Funding Legislation

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- With Pennsylvania operating without a budget since July 1, the state Senate today failed to override Governor Wolf's veto of temporary, stopgap funding legislation.

Democratic Governor Tom Wolf last month vetoed Republican-backed legislation that would have provided about four months of funding as negotiations on a final budget continue. On Wednesday, the state Senate –voting along party lines – failed to get the two-thirds vote necessary to override Wolf's veto of that stopgap legislation.

Allegheny County Democrat Jay Costa is the Senate minority leader. He says, "Folks want us to continue to fight on principle."

Republican Jake Corman, the Senate majority leader says, "Why would we not want to get money to our school districts? Why would we not want to get money to our social services in the meantime?"

As the Senate debated, the state auditor general held a news conference saying that as a result of the budget stalemate, the state's school districts have now borrowed at least $431 million, with interest on that of up to $14 million.
