Delaware County Launches Its Own Job Stimulus Program

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County officials are launching a jobs stimulus program aimed at hooking up the unemployed and underemployed with companies searching for workers.

It's called the "On-the-Job Training" program and is a partnership led by the Delaware County Office of Workforce Development.

Francis Carey, office director, says some $127,000 from state and federal sources is being used to fund it.

He says the county is looking to target businesses on the cusp of hiring new employees.

"The only thing that's inhibiting them from doing so is that the work force candidates they have don't necessarily seem to have the skill sets that they need as that person enters their shop."

Carey says the program pays the employer to train and then commit to hiring the new worker.

Trish McFarland is president of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. She says small businesses especially could realize a big benefit.

"Because it helps their bottom line. If they're on the fence about hiring somebody new, this is a nice little added bonus to hire somebody."

The county hopes to place 50 to 60 people in jobs that pay what officials labeled family-sustaining wages.
