Philadelphia's National Constitution Center Honors The Dalai Lama
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The National Constitution Center on Monday evening honored the Dalai Lama with an award that's been given to world leaders, dignitaries and activists who fight for human rights.
Each year, the Liberty Medal is presented to someone who officials at the National Constitution Center think exudes courage and conviction and helps to better the lives of others.
This year Philadelphia native, internationally renowned actor and close friend to the Dalai Lama, Richard Gere was on hand to represent the Tibetan spiritual leader, who could not make the ceremony due to health concerns. "This is a man who touches everyone. I've seen him in Asia, I've seen him in Australia, all over America, Europe. It doesn't matter how old, what gender, what culture you come out of," he said. "This is one of the great ones, who's truly compassionate, has true wisdom and he has strength, power and skill."
Even though he could not be there in person the Dalai Lama did send a message of thanks via a prerecorded message.
"My friends, we are human brothers and sisters, the concern about the well-being of humanity is everybody's responsibility," he said. "Each of you think... how much I can make... a contribution for better world, happier world, healthier world, including the environment."
Liberty Medal recipients in year's past include Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. Bush, as well as Malala Yousufzai, who at 17, is the youngest person to win the award.
