Philly Elementary School In National Spotlight For Being Healthy

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An elementary school in Philadelphia's Bustleton section has won a national award for being healthy.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation recognized Anne Frank Elementary School as a national healthy school for food, physical activity, employee wellness, and wellness policies.

"Its really not about the award its about the change of our school culture," says principal Mickey Komins.

He says several years ago they started moving to a healthier school by banning cupcakes for birthdays and other celebrations, and healthier options are now being brought in:

"Sometimes they bring in small soft pretzel bites, fruit, a child one Halloween brought in broccoli slaw for the class."

He says eating right and exercising promotes learning.

Some of the activities consist of a before-school walking club and after school yoga and kickboxing classes, not only for students but for teachers and parents too.
