Villanova Heads Down To Towson Saturday Night

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It will be a key game for the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday night as they travel down to Maryland to visit the Towson Tigers.

Both these teams are 3-3 overall this season. Villanova is 2-1 in the CAA, Towson 1-2. The Wildcats picked up their third win this past Saturday as they humbled Albany on the road, 37-0. It was a badly needed win for Villanova after back-to-back losses to Penn and William and Mary.

"It was the game we needed," Villanova head coach Andy Talley tells KYW Newsradio. "We got over the hump a little bit. Our quarterback, Zach Bednarczyk, was 12 for 12 (passing the football), which is kind of unheard of. And we really did a great job on defense. You don't get many shutouts in this league. We (forced) five turnovers and the team really played well on the road and that was a key."

Towson is coming off a 21-14 win on the road at Stony Brook last time out.

"They are really a team like us," Talley says. "They have talent and on any given day I think they can beat anybody in our league. They are really big and physical, very, very physical. It's their homecoming, it will be a sellout crowd. It's a raucous place to play. So we're going to be up against it. We're going to have to go in there and play our best game to win this game."

The Tigers average just under 25 points a game on offense.

"They have a tremendous running back (Darius Victor)," Talley says. "He is about 230 pounds and I'm very concerned about him because they are going to run him down our throat for sure. I like their quarterback (Connor Frazier), very good. Nice skill at the flank and a big offensive line."

Victor averages nearly 96 yards a game on the ground and 5.3 yards a carry. Frazier is completing 57% of his passes and has 6 touchdown throws.

On the other side of the football, Towson is allowing 26 points a game this season.

"They have a lot of size on their front four," Talley says. "They average about 300 pounds, which is unusual in college football today. A lot of speed in the secondary and a lot of skilled players."

Last season, Villanova hammered Towson, 42-14, on the Main Line.

Saturday night's game kicks off at 7:00.
