Nike Brings Back To The Future To Life With The Nike Mag

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- October 21, 2015 marks Back To The Future Day in honor of the wildly popular film which gave us all a glimpse into the future and used this day as the backdrop for it.

While some aspects of the look ahead have not quite become reality, Nike has made one element of it a real thing. Today, the company unveiled the 2015 Nike Mag.

For the film, Nike aimed to make a shoe that looked like it could exist in a futuristic world and now that shoe does. One of the most impressive features of the sneaker is its self-tying ability. The company has named them "power laces."

The technology allows the shoe to sense the wearer's motion to provide support.

The company also made sure that the original wearer, Michael J. Fox, had the opportunity to put on the first pair.

Nike Designer Tinker Hatfield sent a letter to Fox about the groundbreaking footwear:

The company stated on Wednesday that the 2015 Nike Mag will only be available through auction and that the money from the sale of the shoes will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

The company will release auction details in the Spring of 2016.
