Health: Giant Breast Exhibit Serves To Educate During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Stephanie Stahl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A special event today in honor of breast cancer awareness month, it was a women's wellness day in South Philly with an eye catching feature.

They were breasts like you've never seen before, camped out at Snyder Plaza in South Philadelphia, grabbing lots of attention.

"People kept saying why are there boobs in the parking lot," said Ellen Lissy Rosenberg with The Goldenberg Group, which sponsored the exhibit.

It's an up close, inside view of the breast.  Rosenberg says, "There really is an educational component,  if you walk through inside you see anatomy physiology of the breast and how they work."

Inside the 13-foot-high, 20-foot-long inflated exhibit, people can see blood vessels, milk ducts, lymph nodes and all the other anatomy of a breast.

"I've never gone inside breast before, I love anatomy, it's very educational," said Megan Do Nacsimento. She  wants women to know about the importance of early detection,  she ended up with a double mastectomy after being diagnosed late.

Diane Pirollo, with Methodist Hospital and the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson says, "The message we want to give women is to be proactive about their own health."

Doctors say because of better awareness and regular mammograms a growing number of women are now surviving breast cancer, plus screenings and treatments are getting better all the time.

Methodist Hospital will offer free mammograms to uninsured women Tuesday Oct. 27, call 215-952-9169 for more information.
