DNC Committee Announces "Ambitious" Goal

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)-- The 2016 Democratic National Convention Committee has announced what it says is the most ambitious goal ever for including women and minority-owned business participation.
"It is our goal to make this one of the most inclusive conventions in history," says CEO Leah Daughtry.
Daughtry says the Committee aims to give 35% of its contracts to businesses with women, ethnic minorities, veterans or LGBT owners. That would be about $17 million of the $50 million the Committee expects to spend.

Overall, officials are estimating the convention could bring $350 million to the local economy. Mayor Nutter- aware of the disappointing results from the Pope's visit- stressed this is a different kind of event.
"The one thing we know about convention-goers is they like to eat. They're going to pack restaurants all over town, and they'll make up for whatever they missed a couple weeks ago," he said.
The Mayor also said he was not concerned about carpenters' union pickets at the convention center. Delegates in town to tour the facility refused to cross the picket line and go inside during a Wednesday visit.
