Police: 91-Year-Old Woman Struck By Bus In East Oak Lane

By Diana Rocco

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say a 91-year-old woman was struck by a bus in Philadelphia's East Oak Lane neighborhood.

The woman was crossing the street with her 68-year-old nephew.

Police say she was in the crosswalk on 5th Street as the bus was making a left-hand turn off of Godfrey Avenue just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"The rear wheels of the SEPTA bus ran over her lower torso and both of her legs," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

When paramedics arrived the woman who lives nearby was trapped under the bus's back driver side tires and had to be rescued.

"After striking this female the bus driver did the right thing, immediately came to a stop and identified himself to police. We know that the SEPTA bus was almost completely full. There were 42 passengers," said Small.

The elderly woman who was walking unassisted was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center with a crushed lower torso and legs. Police say the bus's dash cam recorded the woman and her nephew crossing the street but they are now looking for other cameras in the area that may have captured the entire incident.

"It clearly shows the bus making the left-hand turn onto 5th Street from Godfrey and it shows the two individuals, the one being the 91-year-old woman, it showed them crossing the street," said Small.

Police say the woman is listed in extremely critical condition.

This is all still under investigation.
