Self Serve Beer Taps Debut At The Wells Fargo Center

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Self-serve beer is now being sold at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

"You're timed to pour your beer, it also shows your remaining balance, which declines as you pour."

"The ounces going up and your value going down."

Wells Fargo Center Assistant General Manager Jeremy Campbell showed off the new self-serve beer taps. They made their debut Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Customers put money on a card, up to $40, then just tap the card next to their beer of choice and pour.

(Quinones:) "Have you ever used one of these before?"

No, I have not," said one Flyers fan.

(Quinones:) "And what's the verdict?"

"I love it, because I don't usually drink a full beer so having the option to only pour half a beer is great," said another Flyers fan.

"Fantastic being able to pop out here get a quick beer pop back in, go see the Flyers," said another Flyers fan.

And while a lot of people may love the idea of having these self-serve beer taps, there are some people who have some questions and concerns about them.

'"Right away I ask myself is this creating jobs or getting rid jobs?"

Campbell contends jobs won't be lost, saying two employees are always needed to check IDs and also refuse service to anyone who is visibly impaired.

And just like at other beer stands, you can only get up to two beers at one time and there are restrictions on how quickly you can refill.

"You can only get a beer, it resets itself every eight minutes, so there is a process in place to make sure that we are compliant with the law," said President of the Wells Fargo Center John Page.

Right now there's only one self-serve beer station located near section 106, but plans are to add more if it's successful.

When CBS 3 reached Mother Against Drunk Driving tonight, they told Eyewitness News they do not take a position on the legal sale of alcohol to adultsbut added in this statement, which reads, in part:

"MADD also urges adults that any time alcohol is purchased - at a sporting event or elsewhere - to always designate a non-drinking driver if they choose to drink, and not provide alcohol to anyone under 21."
