Amtrak Passengers Can Now Bring Pets Aboard On Certain Trains

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Starting today, Amtrak is allowing passengers to bring their pets along for the ride on trains traveling along the Northeast Corridor.

Customers asked for the option to bring pets aboard, and Amtrak listened. Spokesperson Christina Leeds says the pilot program only applies to small cats and dogs though:

"Passengers must make a reservation, and the maximum weight of pet with carrier is 20 pounds. And that's for dogs and cats."

Pets must be at least eight weeks old and have current vaccination records. There is a $25 fee to bring your furry friend and Leeds suggests arriving at the terminal 30 minutes prior to departure.

She says passengers must remain with pets at all times and pets are not permitted in Business Class cars or any dining cars.
