Look Up! Draconid Meteor Shower Tonight

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Get ready for some prime time star gazing.

Tonight you'll have the chance to see as many as two dozen shooting stars per hour.

As Meteorologist Lauren Casey explains, the Draconid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night.

The best viewing time will be around 7 p.m.

The meteor shower is created by debris from the comet Giocobini-Zinner colliding with the Earth's upper atmosphere.

We could see about 20 meteors per hour, but the Draconids have a history of producing outbursts, meaning hundreds of meteors per hour. The last one was in 2011 which produced over 600 meteors per hour over Europe. Unfortunately an outburst is unlikely tonight.

To get the best view, lay back or sit down in a reclining chair, look up with your feet pointed towards the north or to the northwest. We're going to have nearly perfect viewing conditions tonight with partly cloudy skies, moon rise won't be until early tomorrow morning and comfortable temperatures all the way into the 11 p.m. hour.
