Pa. House Votes Down Governor's Tax Proposals

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- As Pennsylvania's budget battle drags on, Governor Tom Wolf remains defiant even after his tax proposals were defeated by a significant margin in the state House Wednesday.

The state House voted down the governor's proposals, which included an increase in the personal income tax. Republican Dave Reed, the House majority leader, said the House has chosen a path forward.

"We've recognized that broad-based tax increases, for the budget, just does not have the votes necessary in the House for passage," said Reed.

But even though his proposals were defeated by a vote of 127 to 73 with nine Democrats joining all Republicans voting against the plan Governor Wolf indicated he was encouraged by the outcome.

"It takes 102 votes to get anything done in the House of Representatives. What we showed is there are at least 73, and that was on a really short effort... a short number of days of effort. We'd probably get even more than that… just of Democrats," said Wolf.

And while Republicans may believe the debate over broad-based taxes is over, Wolf says he's not taking anything off the table.
