Phillies Hold First Overall Pick For Second Time Ever

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia sports fans are basically constricted to hope when it comes to their major pro teams. With the Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers in rebuild mode, and the Eagles flopping through the first quarter of their season, there isn't anything tangible to grab hold of.

Hope, contrary to popular, shouldn't be too difficult to find when grasping over the landscape of the Phillies. Thanks to their MLB-worst 63-99 record, the Phils have secured the first-overall pick in the 2016 first-year player draft for just the second time ever.

The last time they had the first pick? 1998.

Their selection? Third baseman Pat Burrell, out of the University of Miami.

With young talented position players like Maikel Franco, Odubel Herrera, and rising minor-league shortstop J.P. Crawford to go along with vigorous arms like Aaron Nola, Jerad Eickhoff, and Ken Giles, the future isn't as bleak as Philadelphia once thought.

The 2016 first-year player draft will be held from June 9th - June 11th.
