Today Is Deadline To Register To Vote In Pa.'s November Election

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Today is the last day to register to vote in Pennsylvania if you want to vote in the November election, and this is the first time you can register online right up to the midnight deadline.

Elected officials are urging potential voters to take advantage of the new system today.

Registering to vote has never been easier in Pennsylvania, but still, the state estimates almost two-million eligible voters haven't done it.

With the deadline looming, State Senator Vincent Hughes and half a dozen other local officials pitched the ease of the new system:

"Without having to go through any walks or drives to the registration office, just sit down at the computer and get it done."

There's a tutorial to make the process even simpler. About 26,000 people have signed up online since the system went into effect in August.

Local officials worry about low turn-out this election in Philadelphia, where the democratic voter registration edge makes the marquee race for mayor less competitive, but Hughes says Philadelphia could have a huge impact on statewide judicial races:

"One side has said they plan to spend almost $10-million electing Supreme Court justices in Pennsylvania. If someone is prepared to spend $10-million, that must mean it's very important."

The registration website is votespa.com.
