PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Could your yard or lawn use a tree?
This fall, Philadelphia property owners can register for up to two free trees to plant in a yard or lawn on private property courtesy of a local program.
TreePhilly, a Philadelphia Parks & Recreation program, helps Philadelphians plant and maintain trees on both public and private property.
Participants are instructed to pre-register for one of the 11 remaining events through Nov. 14th to pick up their preferred species.
At each event, TreePhilly says participants will learn how to plant and care for their new tree and receive educational materials as well as a free bag of mulch. Pre-registration is required for all events, unless otherwise noted.
TreePhilly says nine trees will be available at all tree giveaway events, until supplies last:
Large Shade Trees: Willow Oak (Quercus phellos), Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Sugarberry (Celtis occidentalis)
Small Trees: American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas), White Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus)
Fruit Trees: Paw Paw (Asimina triloba), Elberta or Redhaven Peach (Prunus persica ‘Elberta’ or ‘Redhaven’), Brown Turkey Fig (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’)
The organization says residents with limited mobility can apply for free tree delivery and planting. Space for this service is limited, and residents are encouraged to apply early. To apply, download an application, email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call (215) 683-0217.
