Former Eagle Gets Jail Time In Mortgage Fraud Case

By David Madden

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J., (CBS) – A onetime member of the Philadelphia Eagles will spend the next five years of his life behind bars, after he and his mother were convicted in a million dollar mortgage fraud scheme in New Jersey.

Fifty-two-year-old Irving Fryar was a wide receiver for the Birds and 3 other NFL teams during a 17 year career and later ran a Burlington County church.

He and his 74-year-old mother, Allene McGhee, were convicted in August on charges of ripping off 7 banks 6 years ago.

Elie Honig, Director of New Jersey's Division of Criminal Justice, says the crime went far further than just lying a few times on a mortgage application. "You had Fryar and his mother making false statements and closing on 5 loans in the course of one week and using the same property as collateral on each one," Honig told KYW Newsradio.

Fryar was taken into custody immediately after Burlington County Judge Jeanne Covert rendered the 5 year jail term. McGhee was sentenced to three years probation for her part in the scheme.

A hearing is set next month to decide on any possible restitution, although most of the banks have written the loans off.
